About Gothenburg
Gothenburg, on the west coast of Sweden, is the largest non-capital city in the Nordics. It has a population of about 600,000 in the city and 1.1 million in the greater metropolitan area. Known for its harbour and maritime heritage, the city combines a rich industrial history with a strong commitment to sustainability. Surrounded by rocky shorelines, forests, lakes and a beautiful archipelago, Gothenburg offers a distinctive blend of urban life and nature.
Founded in 1621, Gothenburg has grown into a dynamic cultural hub, with historical landmarks, contemporary architecture, and renowned museums, galleries and performance venues. The city is home to the Gothenburg Book Fair, one of Europe’s major literary events as well as the Gothenburg Film festival and the contemporary dance company at GöteborgsOperan.
Gothenburg was the first City of refuge in Sweden (1996) and since 2021 it is a designated UNESCO City of Literature.
The City of Gothenburg Cultural Affairs Administration runs several museums, a kunsthalle, four cultural centres and more than 25 libraries. The city supports the independent cultural sector which forms a vibrant cultural infrastructure.
The venues of this year's Eurocities Culture Forum are located in the city centre. In addition, site visits will take place across the city by public transport.
