The 15-minute city (15mC) is an urban planning approach that ensures people can access essential services – such as work, education, healthcare, leisure – within a short walk or bike ride from their homes. It promotes proximity, mixed-use neighborhoods, and reduced car dependency to enhance quality of life, sustainability, and social cohesion.
FORTHCOMING, funded under the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) Partnership, explored how the 15mC model can be adapted to suburban areas. Drawing on evidence from six Urban Living Labs – including focus groups and targeted surveys – the project examined how strategies developed for dense urban cores can be transferred to peri-urban and suburban contexts. Complementary semi-structured interviews with practitioners across Europe further assessed the potential for scaling these approaches to diverse cities and urban areas.
The FORTHCOMING closing event is dedicated to presenting and discussing the project’s key findings and emerging insights. We invite experts, decision-makers, and practitioners to engage with the project researchers and Urban Living Lab representatives in a collaborative exchange aimed at translating evidence into actionable strategies for accelerating suburban transformation.
