Located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Athens is one of the most accessible destinations in the region. Athens International Airport serves more than 130 countries and acts as a major gateway to both the Greek mainland and islands. The city can also be reached by ferry from Italy, as well as by train, coach, or car from many European destinations.

Getting to Athens by air

Athens International Airport (ATH) is located approximately 33 km southeast of the city centre and can be reached in around 30–45 minutes by road, depending on traffic.

Transfers to/from the airport

Metro

  • Metro Line 3 connects Athens Airport with the city centre and the Port of Piraeus.
  • Journey time to Syntagma Square is approximately 40 minutes.
  • Journey time to Piraeus is approximately 55 minutes.
  • Due to ongoing upgrade works, evening service disruptions may occur on parts of Line 3. Participants are advised to check the latest transport updates before travelling.

Express Bus Services (24/7) Four express bus routes connect the airport with key destinations across Athens:

  • X93: Airport – Kifissos Intercity Bus Station (approx. 65 min)
  • X95: Airport – Syntagma Square (approx. 60 min)
  • X96: Airport – Piraeus Port (approx. 90 min)
  • X97: Airport – Elliniko (approx. 45 min)

One-way tickets cost €5.50 (€2.70 reduced fare).

Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) connects Athens Airport with Larissis Station, Athens’ central railway station, in approximately 45 minutes. Services run every 15–25 minutes and connect with the metro network at Doukissis Plakentias station.

Taxi Taxis are available directly outside the Arrivals Hall. Flat fares between the airport and Athens city centre are:

  • €40 (05:00–00:00)
  • €55 (00:00–05:00)

Getting to Athens by sea

Piraeus Port, located approximately 10 km southwest of Athens city centre, is Greece’s largest passenger port and the main gateway to the Greek islands.

Metro

  • Metro Line 3 connects Piraeus directly to Syntagma Square in approximately 20 minutes.
  • The same line continues to Athens International Airport in around 55 minutes.

Train

  • Metro Line 1 (Green Line) connects Piraeus with central Athens and links to Metro Line 3 at Monastiraki station.

Bus

  • Bus 040 operates 24 hours a day between Piraeus and Syntagma Square.
  • Express bus X80 connects Piraeus with central Athens during the summer season.

Taxi Taxis are readily available at the port. The journey from Piraeus to Athens city centre typically costs around €25.

Getting to Athens by rail and road

Athens is well connected to the European transport network and can be reached by train, coach, or car from neighbouring countries. The city is served by Larissis Station, the main railway station of Greece, with connections to domestic and international rail services. Athens is also accessible by road via major European motorway corridors linking Greece with the Balkans and the rest of Europe.
